Not much larger than a hummingbird, this tiny songbird is named for the bold yellow stripe on top of it’s head! In Ontario, prime habitat is the vast Boreal Forest, specifically landscapes dominated by spruce and balsam fir, as well as the Southern Shield region. Golden-crowned kinglets are known to breed in a few locations on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula. Most often detected by it’s soft, high-pitched call, difficult to catch sight of within the dense boughs of conifers, and even more difficult to photograph as they are always in constant motion! This one was photographed on fall migration 2023, in a classic, upside-down, feeding pose. I will always recall the thrill of observing this migratory flock of 15 to 20 kinglets, and the images resulting from that encounter. Retired after a 38 year career in Outdoor and Environmental Education.
